Stanley Hauerwas

"One reason why we Christians argue so much about which hymn to sing, which liturgy to follow, which way to worship is that the commandments teach us to believe that bad liturgy eventually leads to bad ethics. You begin by singing some sappy, sentimental hymn, then you pray some pointless prayer, and the next thing you know you have murdered your best friend."

Hey Joel,

Nice quote. Throwing down some Hauerwas on the life-giving nature of Torah.

By the way, where did you find this quote? I feel like I just heard this the other day, in a talk from Miroslav Volf.

Steve,

I found this quote on Gideon Strauss' blog a few weeks ago.

We just learned a bit about Hauerwas' virtue ethic in Ethics class (and how liturgy is one way to form virtue), so it was fitting to come across this quote.

What have you been learning from Mr. Volf?
